The year A.D. 754 marks the first known reference to the name Castrum Faolfi – the Castle of Faolfo - from which the village of Castelfalfi takes its name. The Lombard prince’s effigy is still visible today on the sign ring recovered from his burial treasure.

The Church of San Floriano was built in Romanesque style during this period, coinciding with Castelfalfi’s submission to Florentine rule.

During the 15th century the Caetani family established their presence in Castelfalfi. In 1489 the marriage of Giovanfrancesco Caetani and Costanza de’ Medici marked the beginning of important architectural transformations within the castle.

A century marked by war and political unrest disrupted the peace of Castelfalfi. The inhabitants drafted their own Statutes, a set of local laws and regulations governing the village and surrounding countryside.

In 1619 the inhabitants of Castelfalfi established the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. A wooden structure was built adjacent to the church and used as a gathering place for religious celebrations and acts of charity.

By the late 18th century Castelfalfi and its surrounding lands passed into the hands of two distinguished families: the Tornaquinci of Florence, who held estates in the countryside, and the Desideri of Populonia, who resided primarily within the village.

The Biondi family acquired the entire Castelfalfi estate. A new agricultural direction was introduced, transforming the estate into a flourishing agricultural property and leading to the creation of the Medici park with rich botanical diversity.

After the sorrow caused by two world wars, Castelfalfi embraced the economic changes of the countryside. The traditional production of wine and olive oil evolved with the growth of high‑quality agricultural products.

At the dawn of the new millennium, Castelfalfi experienced a renaissance, restoring its historic splendor and establishing itself as a destination of international distinction. The village today stands as a symbol of beauty, harmony, memory and authenticity.
